Speech Therapy

Deacon had another speech therapy appointment today and Avigail decided she wanted to tag along. I think she's getting a little claustrophobic being in the house and wants to get out and explore the world (as does Tyler). The speech therapist was encouraged with Deacon's improvement. His sucking still isn't 100% and so we need to do a better job of staying on top of his mouth exercises. I had let this slide the past couple of weeks because (in my mind) he was doing so well eating and was "chugging" 6 ounces of milk in about 2.5 seconds. Okay, maybe not that quick. But it's quick compared to the hour and a half that it used to take him. She also told us that we could start the kids on rice cereal in 4-1/2 weeks.

The physical therapist also came in to see the kids. She was extremely pleased with Avigail's "tummy time" and her ability to hold her head on her own. We thought the therapist was going to be really impressed with Avigail's ability to stand, but instead we were reprimanded and told that it's actually just a reflex and we shouldn't allow her to do this until she starts crawling. Not letting Avigail stand is like taking beer away from a college kid, they're not going to be happy. The therapist had recommended some time ago not to put the kiddos in the jumpers and bumbo chairs because they were so premature and still need to strengthen their abdomen (since they came 15 weeks early they didn't have as long of time to be curled up in the womb). So we need to get Avigail crawling. As for Deacon, there's not much to report. He was so exhausted from chugging his bottle that he slept through the physical therapy portion. I guess I can't blame the kid. We're still working on tummy time with him, but he seems to think that being placed on your stomach means that it's nap time.

She anticipates the kids to be rolling over in the next 6 weeks and then hopefully crawling between 7-10 months corrected age (May - August). It's hard to believe that not too much longer and the kids will be mobile. I'm not sure if Tank and Dakota are ready for this.

They both continue to thrive at home. They have been sleeping up in their own bedroom (in separate cribs) for the past 4 weeks. We started off sleeping up in the guest room (next to their room) for the first two nights. They transitioned so well that we moved back down to our room. It seemed pretty empty without their two bassinets. I think them moving up to their room was harder on Tyler and me than it was on the kids. They are continuing to do well in their room and have been sleeping through the night. Every so often, Deacon will decide to wake up around 3 or 4 a.m. Usually during the week, Tyler is kind enough to get up with him and let me grab another hour or two of sleep before it's off to work.

Avi and Deacon have learned to grab and everything tends to go straight in their mouth. It didn't take them long at all to find my hair! I guess I'm going to have to retire my earrings for a while too. Avigail has recently learned how to suck on her thumb, but Deacon is still set on shoving his whole fist in his mouth. His new thing it trying to get it to fit in with his binky in his mouth too! And believe it or not, he's pretty successful most of the time. Avigail loves to try and copy me and make motorboat noises with her lips. This mostly consists of spit coming out of her mouth, but watching her attempt this is pretty cute. Deacon still chats up a storm and a couple times has said "ma". I'd like to think he knows exactly what he's saying and is just trying to get my attention.

Tyler had taken Avi to Fred Meyer with him last week and I was able to take her with me to Costco on Saturday. I had her in the Bjorn facing outward and she is very curious and makes sure to check everything out! Costco was a great place to take her for this reason. She's such a good travel buddy and will go wherever we need her to without complaining.

Life is getting a little easier and definitely more fun!
